Abstract

The majority of the Brazilian soils are acidic and, as such, they can seriously limit growth and development of most of the agricultural crops. Soil liming is the technique most frequently employed to correct soil acidity. The objective of this work was to verify the response of rice upland cultivars to different liming levels. The experiment was carried out under greenhouse conditions. Four rice upland cultivars (Carajás, IAC – 20, IAC – 202, and Primavera) and four liming levels (8.55, 7.0, 26.65, and 34.20 grams of limestone per vase, calculated to obtain, respectively, bases saturation values (V) of 25, 50, 75, and 00%) were combined in a 4 X 4 factorial arrangement in a completely random design, each treatment combination replicated four times. The chemical attributes of the soil were improved by increasing doses of limestone. The efficiency of use of Ca and Mg decreased as the doses of limestone increased whereas that of Zn was increased. A varietal effect was observed as to the absorption and efficiency of nutrients utilization as the doses of limestone increased.Additional keywords: Oryza sativa; soil pH; efficiency in use of nutrients.
