Capsicum annuum L. is the most cultivated and economically important species in the genus, so studies on genetic divergence are essential. Therefore, the objectives were to evaluate the most promising genotypes for genetic divergence using hierarchical clustering methods and determine which characters are most important in studying C. annuum L. genotypes. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse at the Departamento de Agronomia, Universidade Federal de Viçosa, using a completely randomized design with four replications. Nine genotypes of C. annuum L. were evaluated based on five quantitative traits. The data were subjected to cluster analysis using the UPGMA and Ward methods, based on the Mahalanobis generalized distance, and the Singh criterion was used to assess the relative importance of each trait for genetic divergence. Therefore, the results indicated that both methods yielded two significant groups, validated by the cophenetic correlation coefficient, and showed good grouping consistency. According to the Singh criterion, the total fruit weight per plant and mature fruit length were the main traits responsible for genetic divergence analysis. Furthermore, the genotypes Pimentão quadrado and Pimenta Doce Italiana exhibited the most satisfactory results for the stated objectives. It can be concluded that these genotypes contribute to obtaining significant gains in a breeding program and guide crosses that possess high genetic variability.
