Yield and resistance of Bt maize hybrids to Spodoptera frugiperda associated with chemical control

Abstract

The Spodoptera frugiperda is one of the most important maize pests. For its control are used tactics such as: chemical and biological control, and resistant plants. To offer efficient alternatives for control with the minimum insecticides use, the genetically modified plants have been proposed. The objective was to evaluate the effect of natural infestation of S. frugiperda on productivity, leaf area damage and cob damage of transgenic maize hybrids with different Bt technologies, under field conditions. The hybrids were sown in 2019/2020 at Luís Eduardo Magalhães, BA, in randomized block design, in 4 × 2 factorial scheme, factor 1 corresponded four hybrids: AS1850 VT PRO3® (Pro3) which expresses the proteins Cry1A.105, Cry2Ab2 and Cry3Bb1; P3707VYH Leptra® (Leptra) which expresses the proteins Cry1F, Cry1A.105 and Vip3Aa20; P3565 PowerCore™ ULTRA (PWU) which expresses the proteins Cry1F, Cry1A.105, Cry2Ab2 and Vip3Aa20, and 3700 RR2 (conventional) no Bt. The fator 2 corresponded to insecticides application (with or without use). Leptra and PWU hybvrids did not show leaf lesions throughout crop cycle neither caterpillar infestation nor ear lesions. In addition, provided greater productivity regardless insecticides use. Thus, can be concluded that hybrids containing these technologies were more efficient in maize protecting against S. frugiperda than others evaluated.
