Abstract

With the objective of evaluating four crisp lettuce cultivars productivity in a soil and in a hydroponics system during the winter and summer seasons this experiment was carried out both under protected ambient. The experiment was set according to a randomized complete block design in a 4x2 factorial arrangement corresponding, respectively, to cultivars (Marisa, Verônica, Veneza Roxa and Vera) and the cultivation systems (soil and hydroponics), with three replications. The cultivars Marisa, Verônica and Vera showed a good adaptability to both systems : theirs were the highest yields of the aerial part fresh weight. Therefore, they are recommended for the region. The Veneza Roxa leaf area and fresh weight reached values of only about 35 and 55%, respectively, of those of the three other cultivars. Lettuce yield underwent a 40% reduction during Summer cultivation. So, for its economical production during the Summer season, further technological developments are deemed necessary.
