Abstract

Peanut, like other crops, is also influenced by several abiotic factors, such as water deficiency. Combined with endogenous mechanisms of plants, the application of attenuators has become a promising alternative to reduce the effects of water deficit. Therefore, the objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of salicylic acid and silicon in the treatment of peanut seeds under water stress. The experiment was carried out in a greenhouse, using the cultivar IAC OL6, subjected to two water conditions (80 and 30% of field capacity) and seed treatment with salicylic acid (0.5 mmol L-1), silicon (1.0 mmol L-1) and control (distilled water). The experimental design used in the experiment was completely randomized, in a 2x3 factorial scheme, with five replications. Evaluations were made of shoot length, number of leaves, shoot dry mass, chlorophyll and carotenoid contents and malonaldehyde acid content. The results showed that peanut plants under water stress without the addition of salicylic acid and silicon presented lower values of the evaluated variables. The application of salicylic acid and silicon attenuated the effects of water stress in IAC OL6 peanut plants, resulting in better shoot growth.
